f you spend any time in wellness circles, you've heard about "energy vampires" — the people who supposedly drain your energy just by being near you. The advice that follows is almost always the same: shield yourself, protect your energy, keep your distance.

It's a comforting story. It's also, we'd gently suggest, the wrong one.

What's actually happening

Start with a fact from physics: energy can't be created or destroyed. It only changes form. If that's true — and it is — then no one is actually taking your energy. There's nothing to steal.

So what are you feeling when someone "drains" you? A real, physical sensation rises in your body — tightness, heat, a knot, a wave. That sensation is genuine. What most of us were never taught is what to do with it. Left unmanaged, it leaks into our mood and our day. Met with skill, it becomes something useful.

That's the reframe: the people who trigger you aren't draining you. They're handing you a charge of energy — and learning to use it is what personal power actually means.

From reaction to resonance

Working with a trigger doesn't mean suppressing it or "rising above" it. It means feeling it clearly and moving it on purpose. In practice, that looks like a short, repeatable sequence: catch the moment you're triggered, feel how big the sensation is, let it move (the breath is a wonderful mover), decide what you'd rather feel in its place, and then hold that steadier state until the room settles around it.

That last part isn't wishful thinking. Systems naturally sync to the strongest, steadiest rhythm present — a phenomenon called entrainment, first observed in the 1600s. Become the calm, clear frequency in the room, and others tend to meet you there.

Why this matters if you work for yourself

For anyone running their own practice — reflexology, wellness, any small business — this is more than personal. You feel every trigger twice: once as a person, and once as the business. A difficult client, a cancellation, a quiet month. The skill that steadies you also steadies your work. Regulated practitioners hold their clients and their energy; reactive ones burn out.

You don't have to protect yourself from other people's energy. You have to learn to use your own.
